St Mary the Virgin Church, Edlesborough
Overview
The building of the church was started in the late 12th century and completed in the 13th century.
The first Rector was Simon de Belecampo in 1199, and the first vicar was John Moget in July 1396.
The last resident vicar was the Rev Patrick Tracey from 1961 until his retirement in 1971. The church parochial council persuaded the Rev Wyndham Egar, now retired (and was vicar of of the parish 1943 until 1951) to carry on the duties of the Parish Priest until another vicar was appointed. The council could not find a replacement so the duties of the Parish Priest came under the jurisdiction of the vicar of Eaton Bray and now a Holy Communion Service is held on the first Sunday in July.
The church was struck by lightening in March 1828 and the wooden spire was destroyed.
The church was closed for regular Sunday services on 10th May 1975. It is now under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
