Colonel Horace Marshall Moore, D.S.C. , Croix de Guerre, Q.R.I.H. 1923 - 1968.

And his wife Elizabeth Marguerite, 1930 - 2018

 

Early Years

1929

The Moore family arrived in the USA, August 28th on board French ship SS Degrasse.

Family members – Allen age 59, a clergyman, mother Agness age 39, Horace age 6 and Douglas age 3. All were recorded as English, though the children also had US Citizen stamped against their names - Horace’s birth was registered in 1923 at the Galveston Consulate.

Allen had previously spent 20 years in North Africa and Palestine studying customs and the way of life in these countries.  He had a particular interest in music and costume and in later years when in the USA, gave lavishly illustrated talks.

 1930

10th January 1930 -The family arrived in Southampton from New York on the Cunard ship Berengaria. Their intended address was The Rectory, Dry Drayton, Cambridge  and Allen was described as a minister. His age 50, Agnes 30, Horace 5, Douglas 3 and Jean 1.5. They intended to settle in England. The family later moved to Yorkshire where Allen took up another Church of England position of vicar .

Marriage

1950

Horace married Elizabeth Marguerite, youngest daughter of M and Mme G. de Savitski, of Menton, France. The engagement announcement in the Times recorded that both Horace’s parents, the Rev. Dr Allen Moore, F.R.G.S. and Mrs Agnes Moore, were dead. They were married in Andover.

Death

24th February 1968, Laos – see military history for details.

His coffin was so heavy, being lead lined, that it took 8 people to carry it. (source - recollection of a Parishioner, Jack Horne)

13th August 1968 - Probate granted. His address was ‘care of Ashridge Cottage, Edlesborough.

Son Bernard died from asthma and is buried in Edlesborough graveyard.

Wife Elizabeth died in Petworth, Surrey and is buried with her husband in Edlesborough graveyard.
